2004 Spring General Election Endorsements
Vote for LGBT Equality April 6th!
Since 1997 HRL-PAC has supported candidates who will work for and defend lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality.  We evaluate candidates for public office by distributing questionnaires, conducting interviews, and consulting with local political and LGBT community leaders.  The following candidates have demonstrated strong support for LGBT equality and have earned HRL-PAC's endorsement.

Milwaukee County Executive
David Riemer

Mr. Riemer is a strong supporter of the LGBT community and is proud to say so.  As county executive, he would agree to provide domestic partner benefits for county employees in same-sex relationships through a collective bargaining process and would provide the same benefits to non-unionized county employees.  He would appoint qualified openly LGBT individuals to department head positions, county committees and commissions.  In the area of county employment, Mr. Riemer would strictly enforce the policy of non-discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation (among other factors) and would "not tolerate harassment or hostility toward LGBT employees."

Mr. Riemer unequivocally supports the LGBT community and that is why HRL-PAC gives its unqualified support to him.

City of Milwaukee - Mayor
Dual Endorsement of Tom Barrett and Marvin Pratt

Both candidates have great respect for the LGBT community which makes it difficult to state who would serve the community better.  Both candidates have demonstrated support of LGBT issues: When he was 5th District congressman, Mr. Barrett co-sponsored the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and legislation extending the federal hate crimes statute to include sexual orientation; as alderman, Mr. Pratt supported the controversial labor contract between the city and AFSCME District Council 48, the first city labor contract to offer domestic partner health benefits to city employees.  In addition, Mr. Pratt worked to get the support of other council members for the contract and most recently, facilitated a meeting between the citys Health Department and some members of the LGBT community to discuss the health services needs of the community.

Mr. Pratt believes that "education, awareness and stressing respect for all is one of the keys to having a greater society."  He states he will "lead by example."  Mr. Barrett believes that the "best way to foster a climate of inclusiveness and openness is to construct an administration that reflects the diversity of Milwaukee and the strengths that come from diversity," and he states that as mayor he will "put together just such an administration."
